The Ritual - Proof of Concept

'The Ritual - Proof of Concept'

A shot I textured & lit for our final major project ‘The Ritual’.
I am responsible for the lighting in Unreal Engine, environment modelling and all texturing.
The shot was rendered out using the Sequencer within Unreal Engine and served as proof of concept for our final major project.
Character model by Eliott Marchant, Character Design, Topology, Rig & Animation by Marta Andresen.

The shot features a native who has been sent to a cave where he is to perform a ritual for the god his tribe worships. Hieroglyphics on the walls of the cave have led him to believe he is to be sacrificed. This shot features him right after he stepped on a broken native mask on the ground. He is terrified. Then he hears a noise behind him and turns around.

Workflow - Environment
The cave is made out of a series of modular rock assets that I sculpted in Zbrush. These were then duplicated. I decimated and exported the duplicates into Maya, where I uved them. Then I used a combination of XNormal and Substance Painter to bake the high-poly information into a normal, cavity and ambient occlusion map for the low-poly models.
These were  textured by layering different noises and generators to create suitable colour and roughness variation.
I also added a detail diffuse and detail normal texture within Unreal Engine.
Workflow - Lighting
o three-point lighting system with the area light from below functioning as a key-light
o Spotlight from above as a fill light for the torch and environment
o Area fill light from the right to lift the shadows on the native’s side
o Rim light in addition to this fill light
o Sky light/atmospheric light set to sundown
o Volumetric height fog
o Vignette to draw focus on the native
o Slight motion blur enabled
o FXAA for anti-aliasing
o ‘Mesh distance field generation’ and ‘distance field shadows’ enabled to get softer shadows
o Ray tracing enabled
